The “Secrets” of Resolutions

As we creep closer to the New Year, visions of resolutions may be dancing around your head instead of  “visions of sugar-plums” from ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas. Actually, instead of resolutions that seem to last about one week on my list, I’d like to offer the list from the book entitled The Secrets of People Who Never Get Sick by Gene Stone, a New York Times bestselling author. The list consists of 25 secrets that the author explains and explores in the book. Here is that list with some editorial additions for some of the items. I recommend reading the book if you want all the details. The book is quite interesting, so you may want to check it out.


  1. Blue Zones (areas of the world where the healthiest people live.)
  2. Brewer’s™s Yeast
  3. Caloric Reduction
  4. Chicken Soup
  5. Cold Showers
  6. Detoxification
  7. Eating Dirt (Not being germaphobic; some are helpful)
  8. Friends
  9. Garlic
  10. Germ Avoidance (Those that are harmful)
  11. Good Genes
  12. Herbal Remedies
  13. Hydrogen Peroxide
  14. Lifting Weights
  15. Napping
  16. pH Balance (See my review of Acid/Alkaline Diet in Nobody Eats Like Me.)
  17. Plant-Based diet (Not necessarily vegetarian, but a  diet heavy in plant food)
  18. Positive Attitude
  19. Probiotics (Substances containing beneficial microorganisms)
  20. Running
  21. Spirituality
  22. Stresslessness
  23. Stretching
  24. Vitamin C
  25. Yoga

You may want to focus on 10 or 12 that you can handle and start there, adding others that are more challenging as the months go by, maybe one or two every month, so that focusing on health is ongoing without being too stressful (See #22.) The 12 that I already practice are #6, #8, #9, #12, #14, #15, #16, #17, #18, #23, #24, #25. Thus, for me, the challenge is to look into the other items more carefully to see what I can add to my health list, such as #3, #13, #22, and #19.

This is supposed to be the season of joy, so please approach this idea with a joyful heart and do your best without becoming over-stressed. Even a small change in you diet by exploring what people in the Blue Zones eat to stay healthy is a step in the right direction.
