The Perfect 10 Diet by Michael Aziz, M.D.

This is one diet book that I recommend reading cover to cover, because it deals with 10 key hormones related to weight gain. Actually, the subtitle to The Perfect 10 Diet is: 10 Key Hormones that hold the secret to losing weight and feeling great—fast!

The 10 hormones that Dr. Aziz discusses in detail are:

1. & 2. insulin & glucogen, both of which affect food storage
3. leptin, which gives us a feeling of fullness and satiety
4. growth hormone, which is involved in repairing tissues & muscles
5. & 6. cortisol & thyroxin, which affect our energy levels
7. DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone), which improves our sense of well-being
8. , 9. & 10. sex hormones: estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone, which affect aging, libido, fertility, and weight.

Dr. Aziz notes that “Hormones are complex chemicals that the body uses to send messages and information.” (Introduction). He than explains that his Perfect 10 diet balances hormones so that we have both an anti-aging and healthful diet. What a great combo!

This is a very comprehensive book that is more than a diet book.  The author uses easy-to-understand language to explain how each of these hormones affects our overall health, including reaching a healthful weight and keeping it there.

In one sense, this book is like a basic health primer because Aziz discusses what nutrients our bodies need, how we can be savvy consumers of food that help keep us healthy, how to eat out with this diet as well as how we can incorporate his concepts, such as exercise, into our everyday life. There are also helpful lists, such as which condiments are part of the diet, as well as a review of the popular diets already out there and how they measure up or fall short of their goal.

I rarely reread a book I review, but this is one that I plan to reread because it is packed with so much good information that I need to go over it again in order to incorporate his ideas into my own diet, which I would like to refine per some of his excellent suggestions.

Since menopause triggers a huge change in female hormones, I feel this book holds the key to understanding how our bodies change before, during and after menopause in terms of seemingly inexplicable weight gain. It is published by Cumberland House, an imprint of Sourcebooks, Inc. and costs $24.99. (hardcover)
