World Health Day was last week and I received an email copied below. As a vegetarian I would not normally post this, but in red below are the reasons for this report, all of which make for an unhealthy body AND an unhealthy planet, so I am posting it as part of Earth Day Every Day on my website.
We are excited to announce the launch of our new report, The Hidden Health Impacts of Industrial Livestock Systems. The report unveils the true hidden health costs of industrial livestock systems, also called factory farms, which damage our health through multiple interconnected pathways. They make us ill, drive climate change and biodiversity loss, and cause suffering to billions of farmed animals each year.
This extensive analysis examines how factory farming makes us sick through five interrelated pathways of impact including:
• Unhealthy diets and food insecurity
• Harmful diseases and antibiotic-resistant bacteria
• Contaminated foods
• Air and water pollution
• Worker illness and injury
Each of these parameters show us how the reliance on the animal agriculture industry for cheap and unsustainable food options is taking a toll on our health. In fact, it is precisely because the industry is not accountable for these harms that factory farmed products are so cheap.
The key findings from this report are critical in pressuring governments and corporations around the world to stop turning a blind eye to the public health toll of factory farming as well as the suffering of billions of farmed animals. The detrimental effects of this industry will continue to have an influence on our health, and the health of future generations, if we don’t act now.
With your help, we can push to end factory farming and break the cycle of suffering in our food systems. By signing your support for the Farm Systems Reform Act, you can urge our legislators to hold meat companies responsible for the harm caused by factory farms.
