Recalling Betty Bacall, a.k.a Lauren Bacall

Here is a link to Women’s Voices for Change about the life Lauren Bacall: There is a good video that reviews her career and of course, focuses on the love of her life, Humphrey Bogart.

Having grown up in the 40s and 50s when movies were a major form of entertainment, I remember Lauren Bacall as a sexy, sophisticated young woman. In her autobiography, By Myself, she downplays this and reminds us her real name is Betty, not Lauren, and she is just a Jewish broad for NY. ( I see she has another called By Myself, and Then Some. Will have to get that from the library.)

I always thought that Bacall deserved more accolades than she received. She never gave a bad performance and was very talented, as Ben Mankiewicz notes in the video. Her death at 89 is sad because we won’t see her lovely face in person anymore. Thank goodness for Turner Classic Movies, because we can watch her again & again!

Rest in Peace.

This photo of her Oscar reminded me of a clip I saw yesteday on the TV in which she says, “At last, a man!”
