12/8/19 UPDATE: I just learned that Buddha Teas do use a dab of plastic to seal the string to the bag, but the bag itself does not hAve plastic, so I will cut open the bag and make loose tea for now. I called the company yesterday but forgot to put it on this posting before it published under Buddha Teas at the bottom of the page.
I sent to the companies that sell the organic teas that I buy to see if their is plastic in their tea bag paper, and so far, nothing negative. I found a website that explores this further: https://myplasticfreelife.com/discuss/plastic-free-alternatives/tea/.

Brands with tea bags that are compostable (no plastic): Celestial Seasonings (see below); Mighty Leaf Teas(now’s owned by Peet’s)* Numi Teas; Republic of Tea; Stash; Yogi Tea (see below);
Brands with tea bags that are NOT compostable: Tazo; Teavana (Starbucks) *commercially compostable, not recommended for home composting. 2. Reach out to the brand of tea you currently drink and ask them if they seal their tea bags using plastic.
I went to Trader Joe’s and was told by the manager at the desk, who looked in his notes, and was told there was no plastic in their tea bag paper.
Yogi Teas (from the Internet): Our tea bags are completely biodegradable and can therefore be disposed on the compost: They do not have a metal clip, are bleached with oxygen, free of genetically modified material and plastic-free. … A 100% plastic-free, heat-sealed tea bag outer packaging is currently not available on the market. https://www.yogitea.com › be-good › packaging.
Celestial Seasonings Teas: On packaging, it’s important for you to know that our tea bag paper is made of a blend of natural, chlorine-free fibers, and does not contain epichlorohydrin. ( Epichlorohydrin is a highly reactive electrophilic compound and is used in the production of glycerol, plastics, epoxy glues and resins, and elastomers.)
What sets us apart from other tea companies? We start with a philosophy of living in harmony with nature, not using it for profit. Buddha Teas uses only fresh, pure organic or sustainably wild harvested ingredients and maintains their natural purity in every tea we sell. We have also created the “Teas for Trees” campaign, planting 5000 trees a year to offset the paper use in our tea bags. Each of our tea bags is bleach-free to eliminate the risk of chemicals, and our boxes are made from 100% recycled material. When you buy Buddha Teas, you’ll enjoy the fresh, full flavor of a truly natural tea in every sip. (Still waiting to hear about the tea bag paper, although the package does say unbleached paper.)
