No Child Should Go Hungry!

I featured on Mother’s Day. Here is one of their petitions that I think fits with my philosophy for Menupause, that is feeding the hungry good food.
Thanx to my friend Honey for sending this.

And part of my Earth Day, Every Day philosophy is taking care that no one goes hungry when there is plenty of food on the planet. Mother Nature provides and the government should not take away what she provides. Having enough food is a right, not a privilege.

I’ll be totally honest with you:

The language I used upon learning that Donald Trump is proposing an $193 billion cut to SNAP (food stamps) was not exactly child-friendly. [1] Trump’s proposal puts at risk the 40 million people, especially children and the elderly, that rely on SNAP to put food on the table. [2] This hurts people and our economy alike!

Well, I’ve yelled into pillows. I’ve shaken my fist in the air. I’ve taken a number of deep breaths. And now I’m ready to take action!

***Join me in telling Congress to immediately reject Trump’s proposal to massively slash SNAP and instead protect the program for hungry children and families!

Here’s what’s going on: Last week Donald Trump proposed his full national budget and it includes a massive cut—more than 25%!— to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which would  reduce benefits for hundred of thousands families and shift the cost to our already financially stretched states and hurt our economy. The unemployed, the elderly, and our low-income working families would bear the brunt of these cuts. [3]

In addition, Trump wants to create an extreme barrier to accessing the program by requiring some SNAP recipients be employed. The fact is that when you lose your job you are most at risk for hunger, and over half of households with children receiving SNAP already have at least one working adult in the family. [4] Trump creates this needless barrier, but doesn’t offer up any funding for job training or job creation. Many families are still struggling to recover from the recession and loss of jobs in their communities and SNAP is the only thing keeping them out of poverty or from falling deeper into poverty. This proposal is callous, heartless, and careless. It will hurt our families AND our economy.

Since its bipartisan origin, SNAP has operated as a national program with benefits paid by the federal government—a structure that was intended to address the enormous disparity in hunger and poverty across states and provide adequate resources in times of economic trouble. If Trump gets his way, states will suffer a budget crisis attempting to pick up the costs, and many of them will fail doing so, meaning our hungry families will sink deeper into poverty, be unable to put food on the table, and our economy will suffer.

But we have time to stop this! Trump’s budget is only a recommendation. It’s up to the U.S. Congress to pass the final budget and they must say no to this atrocious cut to SNAP.

**Sign our letter to Congress now and tell them to immediately reject Trump’s budget and his plans to slash SNAP!

The reason this is so careless is we know SNAP works! SNAP lifts up the most vulnerable among us. 70% of SNAP participants are in families with children (and over half of those families have at least one adult in the household working). [4,5] SNAP helps parents work, promotes healthy eating, and responds quickly to disasters and crisis like a hurricane or an economic downturn.

Moreover, lifts the economy. The USDA has found that SNAP is a key public program, which also serves as an economic stimulus, creating an economic boost that ripples through the economy when new SNAP benefits are redeemed. [6] Children who receive SNAP do better educationally, have better health outcomes and grow up to be better workers and are better able to contribute to our economy.

We need YOU to speak out and tell Congress to boost our families and boost our economy!

**Sign our letter now and tell Congress to reject Trump’s cuts to SNAP:

SNAP has helped millions of families for decades. Trump’s budget will make our families hungrier, sicker, and poorer if it’s allowed to be passed into law. Luckily, we have time to make our voices heard and let our Senators and Representatives know that this is not ok with moms, dads, and concerned voters! After you take action, we would love if you would forward this email to your friends and family and post our action link on Facebook and Twitter so we can get as many people as possible to speak out!

Together we are a force to be reckoned with! Together we will protect our children and families!

P.S. Your stories matter! When you share your story we share them with our elected leaders on Capitol Hill and they make a huge difference. Just last week D.C. mom Jessica testified before a caucus in the House of Representatives after sharing her story with MomsRising. So will you take a few seconds to share your thoughts and experiences with SNAP with us?
