“The better part of one’s life consists of his friendships.”
Friendship Day Quotes by: Abraham Lincoln

Friendship Day celebrations take place on the first Sunday of August every year. The tradition of dedicating a day in honor of friends began in US in 1935. Gradually the festival gained popularity and today Friendship Day is celebrated in large number of countries including India. On this day people spend time with their friends and express love for them. Exchange of Friendship Day Gifts like flowers, cards and wrist bands is a popular tradition of this occasion. (Quoted from www.friendshipday.org, as are the quotes. The photos are from our vacation and I also used some of them on www.divorce-dayz.info.)

“True friendship is like sound health; the value of it is seldom known until it be lost.”
Friendship Day Quotes by: Charles Caleb Colton

While I missed this celebration by almost one month, it is still August, so I figure I am in under the wire. Anyway, friendship is a daily concept, because friends are people you are in touch with on a regular basis, even if that basis is only once or twice each year. Having moved nearly 30 times since 1960, I do have several friends, both near and far. For example, my friend Amparo, who I have known since my 31 year old was in high school, lives in Florida, but we keep in touch by email and phone. We went to Portugal together and that cemented our friendship.

“Friends are the most important ingredient in this recipe of life.”
Friendship Day Quotes by: Unknown

My good friend Rhoda and I have been friends for 40 years and she was my maid of honor when I remarried in 2004. We also lived together while both of us were going throughout divorces, living also with our youngest children. We managed to cry at different times, so we could be supportive of each other. Hope is another friend I have known for more than 25 years.  She is my naturapathic contact as well as a good friend. She took me in when I was floundering after my divorce and helped me through a most difficult time in my life.

“I get by with a little help from my friends.”
Friendship Day Quotes by: John Lennon

My friend Phyllis is also my cousin through my second marriage. She is a lot like my sister Phyllis who died six years ago, so I feel I still have a sister Phyllis. She lives near me and we talk and see each other regularly.  I am happy to have her in my new life. I also made friends with Dorothy in my building, and even though she has moved to upstate New York, we stay in touch. And my walking friend, Marilyn, lives right in our building, so while we have known each other only a short time, we see each other often, so the friendship has moved along rapidly.

“My friends are my estate.”
Friendship Day Quotes by: Emily Dickinson

My friend Darlene and I know each other from our kids’ grammar school days.  She lives about 3 hours away and we manage to get together once or twice each year. On the other hand, I started a new friendship at my 50th reunion with a classmate I never knew in college and now Paula & I meet in New York to do something fun or educational together.

“Two may talk together under the same roof for many years, yet never really meet; and two others at first speech are old friends.”
Friendship Day Quotes by: Mary Catherwood

I also have two younger friends, Julie and Lynn, who worked for me when I had as health food store and they were in college. Young friends help you stay young at heart! (I also have a friend who I befriended by mail when she was in prison near my home, then in Williamsport, PA. I visited her regularly and now write to her where she is now, which is in Erie, PA). And my friend Jackie came with my second marriage. From the start, Jackie was supportive and friendly and never compared me with Alan’s first wife. I value that!

“Each friend represents a world in us, a world possibly not born until they arrive, and it is only by this meeting that a new world is born.”
Friendship Day Quotes by: Anais Nin

Perhaps my oldest ongoing friend is Flora Jane, who I met as a freshman in college. She has been in my life for so long that I cannot imagine when I did not have her in my life.  She is bubbly, energetic, prompt, reliable, and everything you could want in a friend. When her husband died almost three years ago, I admired how she got through this difficult time and bounced back quicker than I think I could. Recently, my husband and I attended her mom’s 100th birthday. Her mother Irene used to feed us when we would go to Flora’s house to study during college.

Here is the picture of Flora Jane and me, taken at her mom’s 100th birthday celebration.

Friendship is like a perennial river which flows forever. It may change it’s path but will never ever dry up.
Friendship Day Quote Contributed by: Pinaki Prasad Mohanty

Flora Jane has also been very active at Douglass College, our alma mater (part of Rutgers Univ.) She is my role model for her ongoing participation and has been awarded several honors in her various roles with the Alumna Association. While most of my friends, like Flora Jane, seem like “ordinary women,” I feel they are all extraordinary, because they are using their gifts to make the world a better place for all of us.

“A Friend is someone who knows all about you and loves you anyway!!!”
Friendship Day Quotes by: Unknown

My friends come in all sizes and shapes, colors and ages.  Perhaps because I moved around so much, I value their friendships dearly. Why not touch base with your friends today and say Hi?

“A friend is one who believes in you when you have ceased to believe in yourself.”

  1. Dear Ellen Sue,
I am thrilled to see my name listed, and you expressed my thoughts. We didn’t “know”
each other in college, but I guess it wasn’t meant to be then. It is all the more beautiful now.
I wish I had been in your “circle” years ago. Never too late to make new friends. This was a
beautiful piece. Flora deserves to be honored. Wow! God Bless Mom, Irene. Please forward
    to Flora.
    Love to all of you,
    Paula
