Note: Recently I received my copy of Mazon News and the article on Senior Hunger is too important not to share. (Mazon is a non-profit ending hunger organization whose offices I visited when I was in L.A. a couple of years ago.Their goals are golden!)
Here are startling facts about senior hunger from Mazon article:
1 in 6 seniors lives in poverty.
65% of seniors who are eligible for SNAP benefits are not using them
(SNAP replaced Food Stamps)
10,000 baby boomers are turning 65 every day for the next 20 years.
1 in 3 food insecure seniors are disabled.
56% of American retirees still have outstanding debts when they retire.
30% of seniors must choose between food & medical expenses
Personally, I was astounded by these statistics. This is the USA, not a third world country. I was a volunteer for The Hunger Project several years ago and these numbers were not available; the focus was on children, which are equally important. But as a senior citizen who has food on her table every day, I am shocked by this knowledge.
To read the entire article, go to www.mazon.org. The article is in the Fall 2013 issue with the same title as my title above. If you can donate money, that would be great. But the main purpose for my posting this is to raise the awareness about senior hunger in America. Thanx ♥
P.S. October 16th was World Food Day. One purpose was to raise awareness about poverty & hunger, which go hand-in-hand. Make World Food Day an everyday awareness as you go about your daily routine. Perhaps donate canned goods to a local food pantry or donate time at a soup kitchen. Help end hunger!
