Sacred Duty

Every morning at 4 am
I am awakened by loud noises
Outside my window.
It begins with the roar of a truck engine,
The crunch of gravel under monster tires
The truck bed rises with the hydraulic
Hum of a sacred hymn
Sacrificially raising a ton of garbage.
This the prayer of a million
Garbage containers
Going down the unholy road
To the landfill altar
Where the world’s waste
Will be offered to the gods.
Out of sight
Out of mind.
