Jonny Bowden’s The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth

About three years ago I went to a program at FreshLife in Williamsport. My friend Barb Jarmoska owns a store there and she invited me to see the author whose books I had been reviewing for her website and newsletter.  I eventually reviewed all four of Jonny’s Health Quartet, which sit on top of my computer desk as references. Here is the first one:

This is one of my favorite reference books. First, I love the photos of the 150 foods. Second, the large size of the book makes reading easier. Second, the book is divided into chapters that deal with one category of food at a time, such as vegetables, grains, dairy, beverages, etc., so you can easily jump to the category you want to learn about. Third, reading this book is like having Jonny’s voice from the seminar in my ears. He writes like he talks, in plain, down-to-earth language that anyone can understand.

The Introduction is a primer on fats, fiber, antioxidants, cholesterol, organics and general information. He ends the Introduction with a wonderful suggestion, reminding us that how we eat is as important as what we eat:

“Whether you’re driving a car, building a realtionship of love and support, or eating a meal, paying attention actually makes a difference. Do it. Savor each moment —and each morsel.”

Then follows all 150 foods divided into the above-mentioned categories. Within each chapter Jonny also puts big red stars on 36 vegetables (superstars) that he believes give you “the best bang for your buck in a crowded field in which most entries are already winners.” Starting with artichokes and ending with sesame oil, this is a wonderful food dictionary of healthy foods.

There is also a bonus CD tucked in  the back cover of the book, and in my copy, there is Jonny’s autograph! The book is published by Fair Winds Press and costs $24.99, a fair price for a fantastic reference.
