Recently I received Friends of the Earth Annual Report (2016) thought it was important enough for another Earth Day posting, because the information is varied and helpful to those interested in Mother Earth and caring for the planet. Here are some excerpts interspersed with their logos I found on the Internet.
The report lists four major areas of interest and action: Climate & Energy, Food & Technology, Economics & Policy, Oceans & Vessels and a page called On the Legal Front. Here are some examples of each area:
- Climate and Energy –  During the past year, FOE “reached a historic agreement with Pacific Gas and Electric to shut down California’s last commercial nuclear plant at Diablo Canyon and replace it entirely with greenhouse-gas-free renewable energy.”
- Food & Technology – Re: Bees – “A recent study found that 74 percent of growers are eliminating the use of bee-killing neonicotinoids in production in 2016.” Also, many large companies such as Costco, Whole Foods, Home Depot and Lowe’s have already made anti-neonic pledges in order to protect pollinators such as bees.
- Economics & Policy –  In 2016 FOE won a $500 million contribution (while Obama was still president) to the Green Climate Fund that helps countries “adapt to and mitigate climate change, and keep fossil fuels and Wall Street excess out of the Fund.”
- Oceans and Vessels – One of FOE’s big victories is their collaboration with the Lummi Nations and other Native American tribes “to protest and ultimately stop the biggest coal export terminal proposal in North America, at Cherry Pt., Washington.” This was “a huge victory for tribal rights and for the environmentâpreventing nearly 1,000 additional shipments of coal in the Salaish Sea every year.”
On the Legal Front- FOE goes to court all over the USA to fight for a cleaner environment. For example, in cooperation with other regional and national organizations, a lawsuit was filed against the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to challenge the FDA’s “final approval” of a new drug application for genetically engineered salmon by AquaBounty Technologies. The name given to this GMO salmon is AquAdvantage Salmon. FOE is represented by attorneys at Earth Justice and the Center for Food Safety. To learn more, go to their website, www.foe.org, because this is only the tip-of-the-iceberg of their accomplishments with the help of donations and funding. Feel free to ask for their end-of-year report which shows 85.3% of their budget being allocated for their (environmental) programs. Impressive!
The logo above was with the other two with no caption,
but it obviously implies green living.
P.S. For those of you who celebrate Easter, Happy Easter Sunday! I am still celebrating Passover, so once again the holidays overlap.
