In the February posting I focused on heart disease in women. The March 2008 issue of Nutrition Action Magazine, which is the publication for The Center for Science in the Public Interest, has this to say about heart disease:
By the age of 40, your odds of having coronary heart disease are one out of three if you are a woman and two if you’re a man.
This information is followed with an excellent cardiac quiz about heart disease.
For example, here are some of the facts taken from the true and false and multiple choice quiz:
1. High blood sugar can raise your risk of heart disease.
2. Women are less likely to survive a heart attack than men.
3. 85% of women over age 75 have high blood pressure.
4. Potassium is the nutrient most likely to lower your risk of a heart attack. (Bananas & eggplants are good sources of potassium.)
5. Some signs of a heart attack are more common in women than in men. (Women are more likely than men to experience shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, and back jaw pain.)
