Birthday Quotes & Poem
Sunday, December 16th, 2007
Below are some of the other quotes that I printed up for my birthday. See if one speaks to you. (These are also from The Big Little Book of Wit & Wisdom.)
I have also posted the last of my Fall photos. We had such a late fall that there were still leaves on the trees until only a few days ago, when it snowed for the first time this fall in Philadelphia. It was strange to see snow on the ground and golden leaves on the trees. Actually, one of these may have been taken in California in November. Either way, the leaves lasted very long, which I loved!
A salad is not a meal. It is a style. Fran Lebowitz. (I hung this near the brunch table.)
He who hesitates is last. Mae West
Be happy. It is a way of being wise. Colette
I think your whole life shows in your face and you should be proud of that. Lauren Bacall
I generally avoid temptation unless I can’t resist it. Mae West
Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what’s going to happen next. Gilda Radner
Below is a poem from an old friend back in State College, who sent this to me for my birthday. It touched my heart! Thanks, Coll

Somewhere in the back
of my mind
is a poem
I wrote for my friend
when she turned 60.
This morning
I ask myself
has a decade flown
so quickly
as to let
her turn 70?
Indeed, she informs me
such is the year
and such is the day
and echoes
my “Yikes,”
it’s already here.
But if the years
have gained on her,
they have not robbed her
of her delightful spirit,
her heart’s generosity,
or her hands’ creativity.
She still goes on about food
and cooks up the most
amazing dishes,
so colorful and tasty,
as to suggest
that there is a great deal
of flavor and variety yet
to life, of which
she tastes so deeply.
So what is 70
to a spirit that
resonates with youth,
and to one who
probably hasn’t slowed
down one bit?
