Health Flash: Flowers & Honey Bees

For some time now, I have been hearing and reading about the problem of disappearing bees. There are many theories, one of which is related to big industry and another to the loss of diversity of native American bees being displaced by imported European honeybees.

Since there are too many theories to sort through in this section, I encourage you to Google “The Bee Problem” to come to your own conclusion. Haagen-Dazs has its own website (HelptheHoneyBees.com) on how you can help save the bees; that may be a good place to start. While I am not an ice cream lover, per se, they do have the finances to do research, although they may be part of the problem, since they are part of corporate America.

This situation requires more research. If anyone has any relevant information, I would be happy to hear from you in the comment section.

The florist shops depend on bees to keep the flowers blooming.

A bee is perched on the flower stem in the left side of the photo.

In the meantime, I wrote this poem dedicated to flowers and bees to make me aware of the situation:

Bee Careful

Flowers blooming everywhere—a windowsill, a flower pot, a back of stair.
Petals pushing through cracks & nooks, then pressed in pages of favorite books.
These lovelies exist to please our eyes, and a wedding bouquet can issue sighs.

Bees buzz from garden to farmers’ fields, then make their honey, its sweetness yields
Food for all, as Nature intended; the balance is off, it’s been up-ended.
Let’s correct our errors to save the bees, so flowers will blossom in next year’s breeze.

Flowers blooming everywhere; keep them blooming, take care, take care!
