EARTH DAY EVERY DAY: April 2018

 

Obviously from the title and picture above, the focus this month will be on Earth Day. BUT, April has other interesting topics I wish to explore, such as National Poetry Month, National Library Week, Spring, and of course, recipes featuring foods that are in season, such as asparagus and spring onions.

Back to Earth Day. I suggest you go to earthday.org to see their 2018 campaign. It is: End Plastic Pollution: Countdown to April 22. I have an essay I will post about recycling bins at my local LA Fitness Club. I spent one year reaching out to corporate headquarters and finally got results, almost accidentally, from the new manager. I call it: “Patience, Persistence, and Perseverance.”

Since I love poetry and April is National Poetry Month, I will be featuring poems from Mary Lou Meyers and Barbara Crooker, whose poems I have posted before. But I will be using new ones. I may also post one of my rhymes.

When I lived in State College, I attended several Poetry Slams, which are opportunities to read poems aloud, actually perform your poem. With the picture above there was a note that you could find out about poetry slams on You Tube. I Googled You Tube and found many, many poetry performances, so check one or two out by going to Poetry Slams on You Tube.

 

I would also like to include quotes as part of this month, because, like poetry, they have to convey a  concept in only a few words. Here is a quote from the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Cryptoquote puzzle that is perfect for National Library Week, April 8th-14th. I also plan to review a book that particular week to remind you to use your local public library.

While March 20th is the first day of spring, I feel April is when spring actually starts, so I hope to have some photos of early spring flowers and leafing trees.
Here’s one from photos I took at the gardens near my alma mater some time ago:

I think of asparagus as one of the first veggies of spring, so I hope to feature one of Kathy Gunst’s soup recipes with asparagus. (I reviewed her book Soup Swap, last month, with two recipe postings.)

 

I’d also like to make a spring salad using roasted asparagus with sprouts. I have been growing micro-greens as well as jar sprouts, so either will work.

P.S.  March was National Nutrition Month.  I thought it was April. But I will post some Nutrition Nuggets anyway! I was saving them especially for what I thought was National Nutrition Month and don’t want to wait until next March to post some of them.
