4 Seasons in 4 Weeks (4S/4W) by Suzanne Mathias McQueen

During the last few months I have been reviewing the incredible book, 4Seasons in 4Weeks by Suzanne Mathis McQueen. For previous postings, click on these internal links. Today’s posting is Chapter 9. There is one more chapter and the conclusion, which I hope to post at the end of the month or in early October.

In Chapter Nine, Suzanne McQueen provides us with true stories of women who have experienced problems with their cycles and how they resolved them with the author’s help. The chapter is entitled ” Challenging & Non-Cycling Rhythms.”

On the title page of this chapter is this excellent quote by Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, who was a pioneer in speaking about feelings, especially those related to loss. The quote is too good not to share here:

The most beautiful people I’ve known are those who have known trials, have known struggles, have known loss, and have found their way out of the depths.

Two of Suzanne’s subtitles in this chapter give us clues as to what she writes about: “Holding One Another’s Hands in Our Hearts” and the “Courage to Have Care and Compassion.” The author’s 4S4W ¬†system will help women understand the wisdom of our own natural feminine cycle not only when things are going well, but ¬†when our bodies are compromised, we have the courage to face the challenge.

Noting that all of us share similar struggles because we are One Tribe— the Pre-Bloods, the Blood Givers, and the Blood Keepers—is a good description of women’s passages. I like these demarcations, because they describe the phases our lives in terms we can all relate to.

Suzanne discusses Perimenopause in this chapter, as well, with its similar signs of menopause: “night sweats, anxiety attacks, intense anger and rage, and loss of a sense of well-being.” From this point we read other women’s struggles and stories, which help us understand that many women have specific issues that need to be addressed, such as infertility, loss of a baby soon after birth, hysterectomy, etc. and of course, menopause.

At the end of this chapter are seven questions we can ask ourselves, such as how to use our time, know ourselves better, etc. The one that I found most compelling is: HOW CAN I LIVE AN AUTHENTIC LIFE? The last sentence by Suzanne in this next-to-last chapter addresses this question eloquently:

Now I can truly interpret the phase “change of life” as not an ending, but as a beginning—the beginning of a new and better self, as a wider, freer, more creative, and authentic woman. I can only wish all women the same.
