A Poem and an Essay for Mother’s Day

My classmate Mary Lou Meyers sent me a lovely poem about her mom that I am posting for Mother’s Day. Thanx, Mary Lou (See my article link below poem.)

Mother’s Day Perspective
by Mary Lou Meyers

My mother is palpable now,
resplendent in her crown of braids,
as if I punched the air,
she would appear for the greater glory,
her efficient figure and form,
who could work circles around me and everybody,
reduced to an inventory of Truth,
while I go on with my spendthrift ways.

She tells the story of unending sacrifice and grace,
her introspective forays into the search for meaning,
what manner or means to dream
far from the  commonplace.
She never let me see the wearing down of good deeds,
her heroic process of everyday,
the upifting up of our reserve
to conserve what little is left for herself
as if her whole premise
was to extol the virtues,
temper and scold her children
into the well-being of their soul,
and finally surrender to the ground below.

I wrote an essay for Mother’s Day that was just posted in Women’s Voices for Change. Here is the link:

Here is the photo of my mom that appears on the website, only this one is smaller. Having this posted for Mother’s Day has made my day, since my kids are far away. But I did see them while in Calif. & Nevada, so the good feelings linger…..

loved the story bigger than life for a woman bigger than life. Interesting how open-minded she was,
and how for the time, willing to tell a joke and tell it like it is, not keep it all under lock and key.
She seems like a “fun” mother as mine was a very spiritual mother, who helped us to lead our Faith.
Sacrifice was the name of the game for her. I’m glad you’ve made cooking so creative, maybe you
decided early in your life, you were never going to force feed your children or send them off to a restaurant.
