The Environmental Working Group’s Year of Healthy Living Suggestions and A Message from Ethical Energy

Recently I received a booklet from the Environmental Working Group that I would like to share with you. They are great watchdogs of our environment and this month-by-month guide will be part of my monthly postings.( I plan to post February’s and the rest of the recommendations earlier in the month.)

January’s recommendation is: Filter Your Tap Water and here is their quoted suggestion:

Drinking plenty of clean water is important for your health.  That’s why EWG researchers came up with two easy steps to help you stay hydrated while reducing your exposure to common drinking water pollutants.

Step 1: Decide what you need in a filter
Step 2: What style of water filter would work best for you.

The extreme cold weather over the last few weeks has had a dramatic impact on energy usage across the United States. This month’s energy bill is likely to be one of the highest of the year because of the weather.

The officials who operate the electric grid are urging consumers to conserve energy this week. Here are some tips from Ethical Electric on how to conserve energy.

  • Adjust the Thermostat: When you’re at home and awake, keep the temperature set as low as you comfortably can. But when you head to bed or out of the house, turn the thermostat down 10-15 degrees F.
  • Unplug Electronics: Unplug chargers when you’re not using them. Use power strips for televisions, cable boxes and stereos. When not in use, turn the strip off to reduce standby power consumption.
  • Turn Down Your Water Heater: Reduce the temperature on your water heater to warm (about 120 degrees F).
  • Solar Energy: If you have any south-facing windows, open the curtains during the day to let the natural warming power of the sun heat your home. Close your curtains at night to keep the heat in and cold out.
  • Put Your Computer to Sleep: Be sure to use your computer’s “Sleep” or “Hibernate” feature, which draws less power.
  • Less Dishwasher, More Air Drying: Only use your dishwasher when it’s full of very dirty dishes. Do as much as you can by hand and let the dishes air dry if possible.
  • Turn Off the Lights: Whether at home or at the office, be sure to turn off the lights when the last person leaves a room.
  • Smart Fireplace Usage: If you have a fireplace, be sure to keep the damper closed unless a fire is burning. When in use, lower your thermostat to between 50-55 degrees F, keep the dampers open slightly and close the doors coming into the room with the fireplace.
