August 2009: Sliding into Fall

August is a “lame duck” month for me, the lull before my favorite season, Fall. It’s the month I hope to clean out my closets, my medicine chests, and my junk drawers. I continue to cull my files, but the urge grows stronger before school starts and I return to substitute teaching. At the same time, August is a time to enjoy the last month at our condo pool, sleep a little later because I am not teaching, and squeeze in some visits to friends while the days are still long.
Of course, this month is still perfect for eating light foods on a patio or at a picnic, so the recipes will hopefully be simple enough to enjoy “al fresco.” Fruit is always perfect for the warm weather and this one with mangoes is one of my favorites.

Last month my daughter and her partner had a marriage/commitment ceremony in New York that was exciting and wonderful. I plan to share a little of the excitement and the poem I wrote as my toast. Here is a photo of the two young women, Maura on the left and my daughter Basha on the right.

During the summer I also received a review copy of a diet book from a friend in Seattle who wrote part of it. The tile is The Ultimate Metabolism Diet by Scott Rigden, MD, with Barbara Schiltz, RN. (Barb is the friend who sent me the review copy.) The cover notes that this book shows why some diets may not work for you and also offers individual solutions for so called “hopeless cases.” I found it very informative and have already recommended it to one or two friends. Since Barb is a gourmet natural cook as well as a nutritionist, there are some tasty recipes to try for anyone who wants The Good Taste of Health. (This is my motto for cooking classes.)

I plan to post an item in Products & Services, such as the vegetable nests we buy at Trader Joe’s, as well as a few pertinent facts or research results in Health Flashes. Since I am cleaning out my files, I will find something informative enough to share. During the summer I have neglected these categories while working on my blog, www.divorce-dayz.info. Feel free to take a peak even if you are not in the “divorce category.” Maybe you will find it helpful for a friend.

Finally, last month my husband and I enjoyed a brief week-end away in Oxford, Maryland, where we had no TV, no computer, and ignored our cell phones. I think there is a Buddhist saying that notes: “Doing nothing is better than wasting time.” Doing nothing certainly has its benefits. It spurred my creative juices, since the rhymes came fairly rapidly. I chose to post this one, my favorite, because it reveals my love for Fall.
to fan the flames of Fall.
Summer just means Autumn’s pending,
Ushering in my favorite season of all.
Enduring the hot, summer days,
anticipating September.
Dreams of basking in Autumn’s blaze,
Ah! The crispness I remember!
