Breast Cancer: Reprint from the Environmental Working Group’s

The Environmental Working Group e-newsletter is one of my favorite emails. This came while I was away & focuses on two breast organizations I have not heard about, so I thought I would share the newsletter.  Their website is www.ewg.org.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Environmental Working Group is proud to support two great breast cancer causes.

In August, President Obama signed into law the Honoring America’s Veterans and Caring for Camp Lejeune Families Act (H.R. 1627). This bill provides essential health benefits to veterans and their families made ill from one of the largest incidents of pollution in history. Camp Lejeune, a Marine Corps Base in North Carolina, is the site of the largest cluster of male breast cancer cases ever identified – which has been traced to one of the worst incidents of drinking water contamination in U.S. history.

The fight to get the legislation passed was documented in the award-winning film Semper Fi: Always Faithful. The documentary follows cancer survivor Mike Partain and retired Marine Jerry Ensminger as they learn about the contamination and take the fight for their families’ health to Capitol Hill.

EWG is also proud to support the Keep A Breast Foundation. The foundation, which began as a small effort to build a support community among young artists, is now the leading youth-oriented, global non-profit breast cancer organization. Keep A Breast provides support programs for young people affected by cancer and offers education programs about prevention, early detection and cancer-causing toxins in our everyday environment.

To mark this year’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Keep A Breast redesigned its website to feature A Fact A Day.

Keep A Breast has also released a new pocket guide titled A Day to Day Guide to Healthy Living
